“These Metros and significant cities will be the first areas in the country to debut 5G services next year,” the Department of Telecom stated on Monday. “The project, which will cost Rs 224 crore and be completed by December 31, 2021, will pave the way for end-to-end testing of 5G User Equipment (UEs) and network equipment by 5G stakeholders developing 5G products/services/use cases in the country, including indigenous start-ups, SMEs, academia, and industry,” the Department of Telecom added.

The DoT is also developing and testing 5G technologies in partnership with premier academic institutes. The institutes involved in the homegrown 5G testbed research project are Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bengaluru, Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering & Research (SAMEER), and Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT).

Auction of spectrum for 5G services will be very crucial since it will decide the release of the commercial release of 5G in India. Spectrum has been allocated by DoT to all major telecom operators for testing of 5G including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea and MTNL. In addition to these companies, Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung, and Mavenir are also involved in these trials.
