Xiaomi 12 Series was announced recently back in 2021, 28 Dec, but the launch was China only. Since then we have seen multiple reviewers wrap up their initial impressions and we got a good idea of the camera performance of the device. Looks like the initial impressions are mostly positive, the camera processing and HDR could use some work, and the MIUI 13 software is not fully ready yet, but besides that the smartphones were fine.
The Xiaomi 12 Series has been really successful in China. According to this article, apparently, 283 Million USD worth of smartphones from both online and offline markets were sold in just 5 minutes. Considering that people are upgrading phones lesser and lesser each year, these numbers are really impressive.
So Xiaomi’s new strategy of launching a relatively compact flagship that is in some ways a downgrade from its predecessor seems to be working alright. They also launched the more affordable option with a weaker chip and no wireless charging (12X) and that seems to have sold really well too.
Considering the phone did this well in China and also considering that these are pretty much the only phones you can get at prices like that with LTPO 10 Bit Screens, and the initial impressions from most reviewers seem to be positive except for the lack of 4K on the front and the lack of an official IP Rating (we have discussed what the Xiaomi 12 series misses out on in this article) and also not-quite-ready camera software, the Xiaomi 12 series was a successful launch for sure.
The only complaints people had about it was that the Xiaomi 12 was not that big of an upgrade of the Mi 11, and the screen was downgraded from a 1440P Panel down to a 1080P Panel. But that was alright because the pixels per inch count was still relatively high and the size was reduced to a more compact form factor.
When are these phones going global? An exclusive article from MySmartPrice claims that the global launch may happen as early as the end of February, if not, it will happen in March. There obviously has been no official announcement or official timeline or anything from Xiaomi about a global launch or an Indian launch as of now, but it is definitely happening.
While there is no official date, the Indian launch is most likely going to be soon after the global launch, if not around the same time. Xiaomi has started launching its premium devices in India so we can expect the 12 series to debut here. The source for this info according to MySmartPrice is a popular leaker and YouTuber Stuff listings.
Xiaomi 12 Series Vs The Competition:
When the Xiaomi 12X launches in India, it already has a lot of competition, with existing phones like the Mi 11X Pro, S20FE 5G, IQOO 7 Legend, OnePlus 9R and GT Neo 2. It will also compete with upcoming phones like the IQOO 9 series, S21 FE, OnePlus RT, etc. MIUI 13 will either make this the best option out there, or it will make it just another phone that just easily blends into the competition. Also if the cameras improve with updates and MIUI 13 is as stable as claimed with optimised apps, then this is a great smartphone.
The regular 12 competes with existing phones like the OnePlus 9 (Easy win there), iPhone 12 (Easy win here too), upcoming Realme GT 2 Pro (we have to wait and watch), S21 FE (we have to wait again), etc. The Xiaomi 12 Pro realistically has no proper competition at the moment except the OnePlus 9 Pro and Galaxy S21+, so before making any comparisons we have to wait for the OnePlus 10 series and the S22 series of phones.
So that is all we have for now. A little update on when these Xiaomi phones will go global and when they might come to India. Let us know if you think these are competitive enough. Drop a comment.
