In Q2 2020, Xiaomi has finally overtaken the popular brand Apple to become the second largest smartphone company in the world. Several reports from many websites confirm that Xiaomi has beat Apple in smartphone shipments. It is now just behind Samsung in number of smartphone shipments. Apple has been pushed to third place now.
Xiaomi saw an 83 percent jump in smartphone shipments over the year, which is a massive jump. The top position is still dominated by Samsung, which is a South Korean brand that is really popular in the West.
Once, Huawei did bag the second position in smartphone shipments, overtaking Apple, but then Huawei faced legal troubles and was banned from the US. So, they withdrew from US Markets and they could no longer work with Google.
Xiaomi rushed to fill in the major chunk of smartphone sales that was left behind by Huawei. Samsung sort of tried to occupy majority of the market but Xiaomi won, with their very aggressive pricing and excellent price to performance ratio. Their smartphones are value for money and their value proposition in the mid range and upper mid range markets is unparalleled. A lot of their success comes from the Mi 11 and the Mi 11 Ultra.
Samsung is, however, still the leading smartphone brand (in shipments) by a two percent margin. They have a 19% smartphone shipments share while Xiaomi has 17%. Apple got a little left behind at 14% according to Canalys Research.
Xiaomi is now the second largest smartphone company!
Oppo & Vivo, both of which are BBK Brands, got ten percent each in Global Smartphone Sales. Canalys research manager states that the only reason Xiaomi was able to grow at this kind of an insane rate is because of their aggressively priced smartphones that come with top of the line hardware. Smartphones from Xiaomi in particular price categories are always easy to recommend.
Their high end flagship, the Mi 11 Ultra, sold several units due to its aggressive pricing. It is very competitive to the S21 Ultra and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Devices from Xiaomi are usually around 40-75% cheaper for their hardware compared to Apple or Samsung.
Can they hold this position of second for a while? Definitely. If MIUI improves and caters to more audiences, especially in the West, they might even cross Samsung. It’s biggest rival right now is Samsung, and the BBK Group smartphones are also quite aggressive in their pricing. Generally speaking, Vivo & Oppo have better marketing too.
In Latin America, Europe and Africa, they have substantially grown their sales over the year.
In India, they are already the leading smartphone brand, beating Samsung and all of the brands from the BBK Group.
With that being said, let us know if you think they can pass Samsung in terms of smartphone sales. We think it can happen. Do drop a comment down below.
